How to use the tone generator
- Enter a frequency from 1 to 20,000 Hz, or choose a common frequency.
- Choose a waveform and channel, then set the software output level.
- Press Play to start. Press Stop at any time, or choose when playback stops.
Choose a waveform
A sine wave contains one frequency. Square, triangle, and sawtooth waves add harmonics, so they have a different tone at the same frequency setting.
Test speakers and headphones
This sound tone generator works as a frequency generator for speaker checks, music reference, and classroom demonstrations. A Hz generator plays a tone at a selected frequency in cycles per second (Hz); choose Left, Both, or Right to check channel routing. Results depend on your device, operating system volume, output route, and room. This tool does not measure speaker response or sound pressure.
Find a musical note
The note display uses equal temperament with A4 = 440 Hz and C4 as middle C. Pick a note to set its reference frequency. This is not a microphone tuner.
Share a tone or download a WAV
Share copies the frequency, waveform, channel, and stop timer into a link. Opening a shared link does not start playback. WAV files are generated in your browser at 44,100 Hz, 16-bit PCM, and two channels.
Troubleshooting and FAQ
Why can’t I hear the tone?
Check your device volume and selected output route. Some frequencies may be difficult to hear on certain speakers or headphones. Hearing varies, so a tone generator is not a hearing test.
Why does playback stop when I switch apps?
Playback stops when this page is hidden or the audio context is interrupted. Return to the page and press Play again.
Does this upload audio or use my microphone?
No. The tone is generated in your browser. The tool does not request microphone access or upload audio.
How do I save the WAV file?
Choose a duration in the download settings. Your browser will save the generated file or ask where to keep it.
